Sports Cast for August 27th:
Okeechobee girls’ volleyball opens their season tonight with a match against Lake Placid tonight, junior varsity to start at 6 pm and varsity to follow.
New head coach Taylor Pritchard is excited about the team and how hard it has worked this summer to get ready. Pritchard has changed the routine a bit at practice with emphasis on jumping ability, quickness and agility.
There is a younger group of girls this year and many starting positions will be up for grabs early in the season. Top opponents this year will include Jensen Beach. They hope to develop some taller players at the net this year. Pritchard said there are several girls with outstanding vertical leaps.
The team has only two seniors and lost seven players to graduation last year.
The Okeechobee youth football league got five victories in games this week. The Mighty Mites won 27-0 as Javaris Johnson, Kamari Jones, Emerson Billie and Kenyon Garner scored touchdowns.
The senior team walloped Sebring 36-0. Jarrett Mills was four for four on conversion kicks. Jay Juan Cherry scored twice on runs of 53 and 29 yards and Lamar Williams had a 42 yard touchdown run.
The Pee Wee team won 15-0 behind tough defense led by Jahkious Cooper. Wilt Williams and Chad Williams scored touchdowns.
The flag and junior teams also won by shutout.
