News Cast for October 22nd:
A good turnout was reported for the Okeechobee County drug abuse symposium Monday.
Sheriff Paul May said he felt the event was productive and that he even learned something. The panel included county judge Jerry Bryant who discussed the drug court, school superintendent Ken Kenworthy who spoke on new random drug testing for students with privileges at the high school, and investigators with the drug enforcement agency. Under Sheriff Noel Stephen hosted the event. He said a local soccer mom who became addicted to prescription pills also spoke to the crowd. He said for the most part in Okeechobee, this is not the norm. Doctors also spoke on the pain prescription crisis. Officials said they would urge the state legislature to keep funding of the prescription pain pill data base that tracks pills in the state.
In the courts, 29 year old Joseph Harris was sentenced to 15 years in state prison or burglary to an occupied dwelling in a plea deal. He was charged with using a knife to rob a 32 year old mother and her 10 year old child in Whispering Pines on April 26th of 2012. The woman was cut in the neck and hand with a pocket knife.
A 62 year old local man had part of his leg amputated in an apparent farm accident at 12543 NE 120th Street on Saturday morning. The name was not available. He was flown to Lawnwood for treatment.
Among arrests, 36 year old Tammy Boswell was charged with attempted arson to a dwelling after a domestic dispute on South West 17th Avenue. She allegedly soaked a carpet with gasoline and set it on fire during an argument. No one was injured.
Sports Cast for October 22nd:
Cheyenne Lusk is one of the captains on the swim team this year. She suffered a shoulder injury and was slowed in the pool this year. Lusk said being named co-captain was a thrill for her. Lusk predicted a strong season for the swim team as a lot of talented younger swimmers have joined the squad.
The Lady Brahman cross country team won The Sebring Blue Streak Invitational on Saturday. Tabatha Henry won the race with a course record 19 minutes and 19 seconds. Alexis Muller finished seventh and Charleigh Heater in 10th place.
The boys’ team took third place out of four teams. Hernan Baltazar finished 7th, Emmanuel Gaona 8th and Lucas Penido 10th.
Valerie Alvarez won the junior varsity race for the girls and Ramon Liberato finished second in the boys junior varsity race.
The cross country team hosts districts on Thursday at the Okeechobee AG civic center.
