News Cast for October 24th:
In the courts, 33 year old Daniel Lamb received 15 years in prison after he pled no contest to armed burglary to a dwelling with an assault. He allegedly followed a woman home on April 5 of 2012 and attempted to rob her in her own home. She was able to fight him off and picked his photo out of a lineup later. Three felony charges were dropped in the plea deal.
The Chobee Courage project with Martha’s House is getting started. It is a teen violence and domestic violence awareness campaign that targets Hispanic and black teenage boys. Coordinator Melvin Cordova has been working with churches in the black and Hispanic communities. They will also create a focus group to try and get feedback on the attitudes about domestic violence. Cordova says he knows it’ll be hard work but he thinks it’ll help reach young people.
This week is national teen driving week sponsored by State Farm. Okeechobee high school and local state farm agent Gretchen Robertson are involved. Www.celebratemydrive dot com…is the website for more information. Grants can be obtained for the schools depending on the number of teens that make the commitment. Muarisa Trumain said anybody from Okeechobee can take part. Students tried to push shopping carts while texting to show how dangerous texting and driving is at the high school on Wednesday.
Sports Cast for October 24th:
Anthony Cal Za DEE Ah was named the new wrestling coach at Okeechobee high school this fall. He has experience as a coach with Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce Westwood in the past couple years. He said he is really excited about the opportunity. Cal ZA DEE AH started to wrestling in high school. He plans to keep things going in a positive direction at OHS. His message to his wrestlers has been to be in shape, do well in school, in the community and on the mat. He said wrestling gets you ready for everything else in life.
Okeechobee volleyball advances again to regional with a tight 3-2 victory over South Fork at the District tournament Wednesday. Okeechobee wins 25-15, 21-25, 25-20, 25-27 and 15-13 in the exciting match over the Bulldogs. Okeechobee will again meet Jensen Beach in the district final tonight at 7 pm at South Fork High School.
The OHS cross country teams will host districts today at the Ag Civic Center. Junior varsity races begin at 4 pm and the girls’ districts are scheduled to start at 4:45 pm followed by the boys about one hour later.
Muarisa Trumain said anybody from Okeechobee can take part.
