Brahman volleyball player Erin Hudson received an award from Sheriff May for finding a wallet at school that included a large amount of cash. The school resource officers recognize school age youth for noteworthy achievements and contributions to their school and community. Sheriff May called her a great example for all to follow.
Florida has seen a 74 percent increase in sex offenders in the past five years. Okeechobee has one juvenile offender, 77 adult offenders and six predators. Sheriff officials said most of these offenders are prohibited from taking part in Halloween activities. The FDLE Florida sexual offender website can provide addresses of offenders in your neighborhood.
In the courts, 44 year old Keith Reese received seven years’ probation for lewd and lascivious behavior on a child under 16. The former cook for Glades County school board allegedly admitted to an inappropriate relationship with a child in Lee County. The relationship allegedly last two years and included nearly 20 sexual encounters.
Florida’s open school campuses, like those in Okeechobee, remain a security concern, amid growing gang violence and crime in the state. Okeechobee schools take all precautions including locking exterior doors.
Security expert, Anthony Hibbert, tells WOKC news that while the trend has been to return to traditional school buildings, it is often too costly for many schools fencing and other measures often improve a schools security.
Among arrests, 38 year old Michael Wright and 35 year old Melissa Wright were charged with burglary and grand theft charges for allegedly burglaries to a vehicle and home on North West 34th Avenue.
2 Okeechobee men were treated at Raulerson hospital after being rear ended on route 70 at North East 48th Avenue. 48 year old Ernesto Diaz was driving a freight truck that rear ended the Ford F 150 pickup. The driver 43 year old Manuel Ruiz and passenger 24 year old Ceferino Espinosa were treated at Raulerson Hospital
Sports Cast for October 30th:
Lady Brahman soccer lost their opener to powerful Martin County 8-0 in Stuart on Tuesday.
Still senior Selina Sanchez is excited about the girls’ chances this year. Sanchez optimism comes from the fact several other sport stars have joined the team to improve its athleticism. She said Okeechobee should be more competitive in matches. Sanchez said she looks forward to matches with Westwood and Jensen Beach. Sanchez advice to younger players is to learn as much as you can because your high school career will go fast.
The Okeechobee high school volleyball team competes in the regional quarterfinal tonight at Pembroke Pines Charter School in Fort Lauderdale, match time is 7 pm.
The OHS swim teams compete in their district tournament today at Sailfish Splash in Stuart starting at 4 pm.
Brahman boys soccer attend a preseason tournament this evening at Lake Wales High School.
