News Cast for February 4th:
A Moore Haven man is the victim of a homicide Friday evening. Glades County Sheriff Deputies released few details Monday only to say Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement is also investigating. The victim’s name is Mario Hughes, who died at the scene. Police say it appears to be an isolated incident and the public is not in danger. More than 70 groups are asking concerned citizens to sign a clean water campaign at the website we want clean water dot com to spur stricter water protections in the state. Chris Costello with the Sierra Club says the Clean Water campaign is more about than just raising awareness, they hope to inspire action.
Among arrests today, 43 year old Wendell Calkins was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He allegedly struck another man with a stick sending the victim to the hospital.
53 year old Robert Widner of Okeechobee was charged with child neglect in Avon Park. Highlands County deputies say they received a complaint about child welfare and found five minor children, ages 5 to 12 without adult supervision in Donaldson Park.
A 36 year old woman fell from her horse and was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center on Sunday. Crystal Deihl was riding the horse at Kissimmee Prairie State Park when the incident occurred.
NO one was injured after a fire at a mobile home at 6568 North East 5th Street on Friday night in Four Seasons. Okeechobee county and city firemen battled the blaze and the trailer was a total loss. The owner is Aline Norman. The resident Brenda Kennedy received help from the American Red Cross. The estimate of damage was placed at over 17 thousand dollars. The State Fire Marshall will determine the cause.
The storm that caused some flooding and crop damage on January 9th and 10th has been declared a disaster by the state. Glades and Okeechobee small businesses can apply for low interest disaster loans with the US Small Business Administration.
Sports Cast for February 4th:
Three Okeechobee weight lifters have qualified for the state competition this year, Julia Weldon, Tamea Allen and Jessica Mond. The competition is this Saturday at Kissimmee Osceola High school.
Head Coach Tyrone Smith said he was happy to see the success these girls had. Allen said she was disappointed in her performance at last week’s sectionals and plans to have a better day at the state final.
Allen said Coach Smith pushes the girls hard and she was glad to be able to excel this year. Mond said she was proud of herself for her performance this year and she also thanked her coaches and friends for pushing her. She said she really improved this year.
On the sports schedule today, boys’ basketball opens up their district tournament against South Fork at Fort Pierce Westwood high with the tip to begin at 7 pm.
