News Cast for February 20th:

Okeechobee Police have a Ft. Pierce man in custody on charges of kidnapping following an incident Friday night. Police say 41 year old Espavious Mills had kidnapped a woman in St. Lucie County and transported her to Okeechobee with the intent to rent out a hotel and prostitute her out for money that she reportedly owed Mills for drugs. St. Lucie County authorities notified Okeechobee Police of Mills’ actions and gave a description of his vehicle. Mills’ vehicle was found on the 900 block of NW 12th Street when police arrived and she was removed from Mills’ car. Mills was arrested and booked into county jail where he’s being held on a $250,000.00 dollar bond.

Okeechobee County Sheriff’s deputies have a Zolfo Springs man in custody after an accident involving three vehicles Saturday night. Florida Highway Patrol officers arrested 41 year old Sergio Benavidez for drunk driving after he caused the accident on 441 near NW 22nd Lane just after 8:30 pm. FHP officers smelled the alcohol on his breath and after a failed field sobriety test, and notice of his suspended driver’s license, arrested Benavidez and transported him to the county jail. No reports of any injuries in the accident or how the accident happened.

Florida Highway Patrol officers are investigating two accidents over the weekend that left two people dead and two people with serious injuries. Early Sunday morning, officers say 29 year old Jose Robles of Zolfo Springs was driving a GMC Sierra pickup east on Route 64 in Lee County when after he exited a curve on the right, he attempted to steer to the left, causing the truck to rotate, colliding with a barbwire fence and fence post then into a utility pole, causing the truck to overturn onto its left side and catching fire. Robles and his passenger, 28 year old Francisco Figueroa of Wauchula were airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. Figueroa died from his injuries, Robles is in serious condition.

Sunday night just after 11pm, officers say 36 year old Billy Ray Rose Junior of Lehigh Acres was driving a Chevy Camaro south on Columbus Boulevard in Lee County approaching a stop sign at an intersection when a Ford Expedition was approaching from the opposite way. Rose didn’t stop, colliding with the Expedition, causing both vehicles to end up in a water-filled ditch. Rose was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger, Isleidy Brito, also of Lehigh Acres was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Okeechobee City Councilmembers will be meeting tonight and they’ll be discussing signage ordinances and landscaping ordinances as well as proclaiming this week as “National Engineers Week.” The meeting will be held at city hall beginning at 6pm.

On the arrest report:

21 year old Korvette Mamie Blue and 22 year old James Glenn Spiva of Okeechobee were arrested by police for battery and simple assault after a domestic dispute. Bonds for both have not been set.

37 year old Jeffrey Scott Blackburn of Okeechobee was arrested by sheriff’s deputies for driving on a suspended license and having knowledge of it. He was released after posting a $500.00 dollar bond.

32 year old Peter Allan Brege of Okeechobee was arrested for petty theft. His bond is set at $1,000.00 dollars.

29 year old John Bernard McNeill of Okeechobee was arrested for robbery and cocaine possession with intent to sell it. His bond is set at $125,000.00 dollars.

43 year old Jason Jerome Clark of Okeechobee was arrested for drunk driving after a traffic stop. He was released after posting a $500.00 dollar bond.

37 year old Romel Nesby of Okeechobee was arrested for failure to pay child support. His bond is set at $1,000.00 dollars.

50 year old Laura Harvey Palmer of Okeechobee was arrested for gross fraud by providing debit cards with no money on them to repay a debt. She’s being held on a $2,500.00 dollar bond.

30 year old Charles Wayne Suarez of Okeechobee was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon in his glove compartment after a traffic stop. His bond has not been set.
