News Cast for May 17th:

Okeechobee County law officers past and present, community leaders and residents gathered in front of the Sheriff’s Department yesterday morning for a memorial to pay respects to Florida law officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2017. A total of nine Florida law officers died in the line of duty last year. Sheriff Noel Stephen spoke of grief giving way to humility and pride when talking of the fallen officers and they deserve more than our sadness. Stephen says once every 58 hours, a law officer is killed; a sobering statistic that officers keep in mind when doing a tough and sometimes thankless job. The memorial began with the introduction of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office’s Color Guard followed by Alicia Esque of Okeechobee singing “America.”

The trial for a Portland, Maine man, charged with first degree premeditated murder, begins this morning in Okeechobee County Superior Court. 42 year old Michael Lawrence Woodbury is being tried for the murder of his cellmate, Antoneeze Haynes of Broward County, at Okeechobee Correctional Institute last September. Prosecutor Ashley Albright says he and his colleague, Don Richardson, have pretty much put their lives on hold for a while to work on this case. Albright says he and Richardson questioned in excess of two hundred potential jurors over a two and half day period before settling on their jury. Woodbury is already serving three life sentences for murders he committed in New Hampshire over ten years ago. Woodbury was brought to Okeechobee under the Interstate Compact.
