News Cast for July 6th:

There was some excitement at United Feed in Okeechobee yesterday. Okeechobee City firefighters were called the site on the 200 block of NW 8th Street a little after 7am for a report of a fire there and arrived to find that some cottonseeds inside there had caught fire, likely due to an auger that was kept on overnight and ignited the seeds. Okeechobee City Fire Captain Lalo Rodriguez says work crews were out of there quickly with no one getting hurt. Rodriguez says crews were on the site for well over nine hours because it took that much time to get the abundance of seed out of the facility via train cars and trucks to get to the burning seed.

While it may be the wet season, Okeechobee County firefighters believe it or not had a grass fire to contend with Tuesday night. Crews were called to the twelve thousand block of NE 22nd Avenue just after ten o’clock for a grass and brush fire near some heavy pine and palm trees. Crews got the near acre sized blaze controlled in about forty minutes with about 1700 gallons of water and no one getting hurt and no damages. The fire is under investigation.

An Okeechobee man is in county jail after a series of incidents Wednesday night. Sheriff’s deputies say 23 year old Allen Michael Thornton was heading west on Route 70 from the Agri-Civic Center just after 9:30, when he started punching his dad in the face. Thornton’s girlfriend, who was driving them, pulled over and got out and walked down the road with her child with Thornton following her into a black car. Thornton assaulted one of the passengers in the car before the driver drove it to the sheriff’s department where Thornton was arrested and charged with felony domestic battery. His bond has not been set. Thornton’s father was treated at Raulerson Hospital for cuts to his nose both ears and cheeks.

A traffic stop turned into an arrest for an Okeechobee man Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies stopped a Chevy Cavalier, driven by 30 year old Steven Wayne Lawrence on the nine hundred block of Highway 98 North just after 12:30 for not stopping at a stop sign. A check through dispatch revealed that Lawrence was driving on a suspended license and a search of his car turned up bags of marijuana in the glove compartment and between the driver’s seat and center console. Lawrence was arrested and booked into county jail in lieu of a $15 hundred dollar bond.

It looks like the repairs on the Alderman Building in Okeechobee will be handled by another company. Okeechobee County Commissioners rejected the bid by local Boromei Construction, Inc. for just over $90 thousand dollars to repair the exterior walls of the building during their meeting last week. Facility Maintenance and Development Director Donnie Oden says the project will be up for bid again and this time he’ll be looking for alternatives to make it better this time, and hopefully cheaper. Oden says the repair job needed is mainly superficial, involving pressure cleaning and resurfacing. Boromei was the only bidder for the project.
