News Cast for October 3rd:

If you’re looking to get to know your law enforcement heads in Okeechobee, this morning is the time to do it. Okeechobee County Sheriff Noel Stephen and City Police Chief Bob Peterson will be doing the annual “Coffee With A Cop”, a chance for residents to get to know Sheriff Stephen and Chief Peterson and ask them questions about anything that is on their minds or just to say hello and get to know each other in an informal way. Stephen says it’s a great way to break the perceived “barrier” between law enforcement and residents because it puts law enforcement in the residents’ environment. This is a nationwide event going on today.

The Okeechobee City Code Enforcement Board will soon be coming to an end. At their meeting last night, City Councilmembers voted to implement a magistrate system to handle code enforcement issues on city properties, thus eliminating the need for the code enforcement board. Councilmembers voted to implement the magistrate system by a 3-2 vote. Code Enforcement Board member Michelle Sanders spoke at the meeting and she’s worried about a magistrate system as code enforcement issues will now be decided by one person and she says the reason it’s come to this is because in this day and age, everyone wants things done fast. Mayor Dowling Watford and Councilmember Noel Chandler voted no on implementing a magistrate. Chandler says he voted no because it really wouldn’t address the problem. The new magistrate will be implemented beginning February 1st of next year.
