News Cast for October 29th:

Jury selection in the trial of a former Okeechobee City Councilmember is expected to begin this morning. 75 year old Mike O’Connor will be in court to answer to charges of domestic violence in connection with an incident involving his stepdaughter last May. Prosecutor Ashley Albright says O’Connor’s attorney entered a plea of not guilty and after a couple of continuances, the trial is set to begin. Albright says O’Connor is facing some possible jail time if convicted. O’Connor is also charged with tampering with evidence when he tried to prevent his stepdaughter from calling 911, a third degree felony. The incident caused O’Connor to resign from the city council at the beginning of June. Trial proceedings will begin at 9:30.

Since the beginning of last week, residents of Okeechobee County have been able to cast their votes for the general election rather than wait for Election Day. Diane Hagan, Okeechobee County Supervisor of Elections says since early voting began a week ago today, there have been, at last count, 1749 people who have come in and voted, with 427 coming in on the first day. Hagan says she’s been quite happy with the results so far. Early voting period will continue through November 3rd which is a Saturday and the polls will be open from 8:30 until 4:30 each day. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th.

An Okeechobee man, already facing several charges of petit theft at Wal-Mart nearly two weeks ago, is in more trouble for the same reason at coincidentally the same store. Okeechobee Police officers arrested 39 year old Damon Lee Cook after Wal-Mart officials say he stole well over a thousand dollars in items in the late morning hours between October 3rd and October 9th. Police say the items ranged from game trail cameras to a Blu-Ray DVD player to a vacuum. Police arrested Cook Thursday and charged him with several counts of petit theft and trafficking some of the stolen items. His bond for these new petit theft charges totals $25 thousand dollars. Cook was previously arrested for stealing $675 dollars’ worth of items from Wal-Mart between October 16th and 17th.

35 year old Cassondra Dionne Boswell of Okeechobee was arrested by sheriff’s deputies for violating probation on undisclosed charges. She’s being held without bond.

27 year old Tallbird Richard Scott Pewo of Okeechobee was arrested for violating driver’s license restrictions and refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test after a traffic stop. His bond is set at $15 hundred dollars.

30 year old Juanita Rodriguez of Okeechobee was arrested for drunk driving after a traffic stop. Her bond has not been set.

32 year old Emmanuel Sanchez of Okeechobee was arrested for driving without a valid license after a traffic stop. His bond is set at $250 dollars.
