News Cast for October 30th:

Earlier this month, two Okeechobee County Sheriff’s deputies were honored for their heroism in saving the life of an Okeechobee resident. Last May, Deputy Robert Feldman responded to a home where the female resident was found face down in a bathtub full of water. Deputy Feldman removed the woman from the tub and began administering CPR. Corporal Kristin Gray arrived to take over administering CPR until emergency crews arrived to take the woman to Raulerson Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the woman passed away a day later, but the efforts of Deputy Feldman and Corporal Gray made it possible for the woman’s family to be with her before she died. Sheriff Noel Stephen says he’s quite proud of these two officers and he says it’s good that they can get a “pat on the back” once in a while despite the difficult job they have. Corporal Gray is an officer of the Road Patrol Division and Deputy Feldman is a school resource officer at South Elementary School.

Smoke coming from a convenience store caught the attention of Okeechobee County firefighters on Saturday night. Crews were called to the 36 hundred block of SE Highway 441 just after eight o’clock and noticed smoke inside the building that smelled like electrical burning. A check of the building with a thermal imager while the electricity was off turned up nothing but after the electricity was turned back on, they noticed the smoke from air vents near the coffee makers and concluded it was coming from the air conditioning unit. Crews informed the store manager to have the a/c system checked before turning it back on. No one was hurt and no damages.

Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies have an Avon Park man in custody and are searching for two more in connection with credit card fraud. Spokesperson Scott Dressel says deputies arrested 35 year old Jessie Wayne Fowler last week for using a stolen debit card in multiple transactions and using a disguise in two of the four instances but his failure to use the disguise in other incidents led to his downfall as security cameras caught his photo and his vehicle’s license plate number, leading deputies to Fowler. Dressel says the disguise Fowler used made his situation worse. Investigators are still on the hunt for 28 year old Holly Peoples and her husband, 27 year old Clayton Nathaniel McCaskill. If you have any information on their whereabouts or these robberies, please call the Highlands County Sheriff’s Department. It could lead to a reward.
