News Cast for November 1st:

Looks like the trial for a former Okeechobee City Councilman will be delayed a bit further. Okeechobee County Prosecutor Ashley Albright says the attorney for 75 year old Mike O’Connor was granted a third continuance days before the trial was set to begin this past Monday. O’Connor is charged with domestic violence and tampering with evidence in connection with an incident involving his stepdaughter in his gun shop last May. Albright says O’Connor’s attorney is looking into possible new evidence. The case is set to be heard in county court again sometime later this month. The allegations caused O’Connor to resign his post on the city council at the beginning of June.

Okeechobee Police arrested a local woman Tuesday afternoon on a host of charges following a traffic stop. Police stopped a Dodge Challenger sedan, driven by 23 year old Rosa Jane Urbina, on the one hundred block of SE 2nd Avenue shortly before five o’clock for not yielding the right of way for the police officer’s vehicle. Police say Urbina identified herself as Jewel Lynn Buck and there was a faint smell of marijuana in the car. A K-9 unit was called in to search the car and a rolled brown leaf wrapper that had a green leafy substance was found in the cup holder and a sandwich bag full of a green leafy substance was found in the center console. Both substances were confirmed as marijuana. A check through dispatch revealed that Urbina was driving on a revoked license and she was in violation of probation. She was arrested and charged with marijuana possession and providing a false name to authorities as well as violating probation and driving on a revoked license. She’s being held in county jail without bond.

Officials from the Highlands County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of a gyroplane crash that claimed the lives of two Sebring men Tuesday afternoon. Spokesperson Scott Dressel says the pilot, 45 year old Christopher Lord and his passenger, 52 year old Christopher Brugger were killed when Lord was flying Brugger to an airport in Manatee County after taking off from Sebring Regional Airport just before three o’clock. Witnesses say the plane was in some kind of distress before clipping a power line and crashing into a mobile home on the two thousand block of Caribbean Road in the Sebring Falls Retirement Subdivision. While the crash killed two, injured one man at his home and did some damage to other nearby homes, Dressel says it could’ve been a lot worse. Highlands County Sheriff’s officials are investigating the deaths of Lord and Bruggers while the FAA is handling the crash investigation.
