Election Day 2018 is in the books and we have some new faces that will be holding county and city offices come January. Supervisor of Elections Diane Hagan says it was a good voter turnout for this general election with just over 55 percent of registered voters in Okeechobee County going to the polls this year to cast their votes. Hagan says the majority of voters came in during the early voting period last week where just over 17 hundred voters came in to vote on the first day.

It’s still technically hurricane season in Okeechobee County, but that didn’t stop a brush fire from happening this past Sunday morning. Firefighters were called to the 40 thousand block of NW 19th Avenue just before 11:30 and found the blaze which was burning about five acres of ground fuels such as dead leaves, fine deadwood and downed logs when they arrived on scene. Firefighters from Okeechobee County and the Florida Forest Service needed about an hour and a half to get the fire controlled with no one getting hurt. Investigators say the fire did damage a homeowner’s shed and part of a chain link of fence to the tune of about a thousand dollars. Cause of the fire is under investigation.

An Okeechobee man is in county jail on a host of drug charges following a traffic stop Monday night. Sheriff’s deputies stopped a Chrysler four door passenger car, driven by 34 year old Joshua Loram Rogers, on the 34 hundred block of North Highway 441 just after eight o’clock for not having a valid registration tag and not wearing a seatbelt. A check through dispatch revealed that Rogers was driving on a suspended license. A subsequent search of Rogers turned up an Oxycodone tablet of which he didn’t have a prescription for and a search of the car turned up baggies full of cocaine and live ammunition rounds. Deputies say Rogers had previous felony convictions and driver’s license suspensions. He was arrested and charged with cocaine possession, drug paraphernalia, possessing live ammunition by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and driving on a suspended license. His bond is set at $22 thousand dollars.

A serving of an arrest warrant led to a pursuit for an Okeechobee man Tuesday afternoon. Officers from the Narcotics Division of the Sheriff’s Department were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for 31 year old Marcus Delance Daniels at a business on the two hundred block of NW Park Street just after one o’clock when Daniels fled on foot as officers arrived. Daniels ran through the parking lot and into an empty lot next to the business. Officers were forced to use a taser on Daniels twice to stop him from running. He was arrested and charged with fleeing law officers and the warrant for possessing and selling cocaine near a place of worship last summer. His bond is set at fifty thousand dollars.
