News Cast for November 29th:

Flagler Park Number Five will be the site of a new sculpture thanks to the Okeechobee City Council. At their meeting Tuesday night, councilmembers approved a request from the Okeechobee Main Street Arts and Culture Alliance to place a bronze cattle drive sculpture in the park. Arts and Culture Alliance Director Bridgette Waldau says she has been working on this project for about a year and the sculpture will be a celebration of the cattle industry. It will consist of nine statues total; one with a horse and rider, one calf, one dog and six heads of cattle. Waldau says she became interested in doing this for Okeechobee after she saw something similar to it recently. Waldau says the project will cost about four hundred thousand dollars to create and she will be doing fund raisers throughout the county to help pay for this project rather than apply for grants. It should be completed in 2021, the 500th anniversary of the first ever cattle drive in Florida.

A traffic stop led to the arrest of a local woman and a North Carolina man Wednesday night. Narcotics officers from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s office stopped the driver of a Ford pickup truck for speeding between SW 5th Avenue and the five hundred block of Route 70 West shortly after ten o’clock. Officers say the driver could not produce his driver’s license and looked very nervous, leading officers to search the vehicle. The driver and passengers, 31 year old Shane Barrett and 31 year old Lauren Elizabeth Masters were ordered to step out of the truck. Officers say Masters had been doing several suspicious movements and a search of her revealed a syringe with hydromorphone in it. Officers say Barrett moved an object from his leg to the center console before he exited the truck. It was revealed to be a white smoking pen with oxycodone residue on it. Barrett and Masters were arrested and charged with possession of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia. Their bonds are set at six thousand dollars apiece. The driver was not charged.

An Okeechobee man is in county jail on charges of aggravated domestic assault and battery in connection with an incident Monday night. Police were called to the 135 block of SE 13th Avenue shortly before nine o’clock after reports of a domestic disturbance and found 35 year old Rjay Armstrong and his brother Jeffrey Armstrong had been arguing, leading Rjay to pursue his brother and threaten him with a machete. Police say Rjay Armstrong had struck a vehicle with the machete after chasing his brother for several moments. Police arrived and arrested and charged Rjay Armstrong before transporting him to county jail. His bond has not been set.

A Fort Pierce man is in critical condition and is possibly facing charges of drunk driving and manslaughter after a vehicle accident Friday night. Florida Highway Patrol officers say 21 year old Tanner Ray Dashner was driving a GMC Yukon SUV at a high speed south on South 25th Street near Midway Road in St. Lucie County just after 10:30 when he struck a Dodge Dakota pickup truck. That impact caused the pickup to rear end a BMW. Dashner’s vehicle slid off the road and the pickup truck rotated clockwise before going off the road. The pickup truck driver, whose name has not been revealed yet, was killed instantly. Other passengers in the pickup truck who also perished include 21 year old Anthony Victor of Fort Pierce, 21 year old Darien Douglas of Port St. Lucie and a 17 year old girl and 16 year old boy, both of Fort Pierce. Dashner was airlifted to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for treatment. The BMW driver and passenger received only minor injuries. The accident is still being investigated.
