News Cast for March 4th:

Members of the local 4H Club paid a visit to the Okeechobee County Commissioners’ meeting this past Thursday morning to talk about the upcoming Okeechobee Youth Livestock Show and extend their invitation to the commissioners to show the kind of work the 4H members have done for the show. 4H extension agent Paula Daniel says people who attend can expect to see the great projects the 4H youth members have done in preparation for the show. Daniel says it’s pretty obvious as to why this youth livestock show is such a popular event. Daniel says the 4H Club is also responsible for helping its members develop life skills. The Okeechobee Youth Livestock Show is expected to begin this coming weekend.

An Okeechobee man is in critical condition after a vehicle accident Thursday night. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers say a 48 year old man was driving a Kawasaki motorcycle west on Route 78 in Okeechobee at around eight o’clock when he failed to negotiate a curve properly, causing him to drive onto the shoulder of the road. This caused the bike to fall over and the man was injured severely after the bike went down. He was taken to an unnamed hospital for treatment and he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. His name has not been revealed at this time pending family notification.

Three inmates at Okeechobee County’s Level 10 Juvenile Justice facility are in more trouble in connection with an incident Thursday morning. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the facility on the five thousand block of NE 168th Street a little after nine o’clock after receiving reports that 19 year old Joshua Ray Harvison and 18 year old Tyler Kirkland, both from Okeechobee, and 18 year old Dominic Daniel Edson of Palm Coast, struck a fellow inmate several times with closed fists following an argument that ensued after the inmate made comments about Kirkland’s young daughter. All three were arrested and charged with battery on an inmate. They were taken to the county jail and their bonds have not been set at this time.

A civilian support officer from the Highlands County Sheriff’s Department was arrested late last month on a litany of charges in connection with a violent incident involving his former girlfriend. Spokesperson Scott Dressel says 29 year old Willie Lee English the Third of Avon Park was arrested February 21st after his former girlfriend, the mother of English’s child, claimed English dragged her into his house after she came to drop off their child two days earlier and struck her multiple times, threw her to the floor, bit her and strangled her. He also reportedly kept her from leaving the house during the attack. Dressel says the mood around the department after this incident became known was typical. English was charged with battery, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment and aggravated assault. He’s currently in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $35 thousand dollars’ bond and was placed on unpaid administrative leave from the sheriff’s department.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers are investigating a vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Sebring man last Monday night. FHP officers say 53 year old Nelson Dewitt Ross was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle east on Route 66 in Highlands County at eight o’clock, around the same time a semi-tractor trailer was approaching from the west on the same road. Ross reportedly made an improper U-turn in front of the semi-truck, who had the right of way, and the truck driver was unable to avoid colliding with Ross’s motorcycle. The impact of the collision ejected Ross from the bike. Ross was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.
