News Cast for August 13th:

Just when you thought it was all over last month, there will be at least one more workshop today regarding the Okeechobee County budget for the next fiscal year. Commissioners will meet to discuss a review of the county’s General Fund departments, specifically the Sheriff’s Department’s budget. The meeting will be held in the Historic County Courthouse beginning at nine o’clock this morning.

Okeechobee will have their current city administrator for the foreseeable future. At last week’s city council meeting, councilmembers voted unanimously to renew Marcos Montes De Oca’s contract for another five years. The issue was discussed for nearly an hour, mainly about salary, but in the end, councilmembers retained De Oca, at a salary of $113 thousand dollars per year. De Oca’s been working under two year contracts since 2015 when he was hired. De Oca says his background in engineering has been a major asset to the city. De Oca’s contract renewal was originally discussed at the July 16th meeting but no decision one way or another was made, much to the bewilderment of De Oca, who was frustrated over the issue not being discussed at that point, and that prompted him to look at other employment opportunities. De Oca’s new five year contract is set to begin on October 1st and he says he’ll use that extra time in office to see what can be done to make Okeechobee more economically viable.

A stolen car chase led to the death of a Port St. Lucie man early Saturday morning in Martin County. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers say 47 year old Robert Alfred Perone was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on the outside lane of Highway 95 near the 92 Mile Post a little before two o’clock when a police officer from Lauderhill, pursuing two juveniles suspected of stealing a car in Boca Raton, was driving his cruiser on 95 on the inside lane and changed lanes, going in front of Perone. FHP officers say the front of Perone’s motorcycle somehow struck the rear fender and wheel of the police officer’s vehicle, sending it to the grass shoulder. Perone’s motorcycle went off the road and overturned a few times before ending up on its side. Perone was taken to Martin Memorial South Hospital for treatment where he died sometime later. The Lauderhill police officer, whose name was not released, was treated for minor injuries. The car thieves were later caught and arrested in Stuart. FHP is investigating.

Officials from the city of Moore Haven are asking their residents to take some precautions as it pertains to water. Melissa Arnold, Moore Haven’s Deputy City Clerk, says a pump failed at Highway 27 and County Road 78 and as a precaution, Moore Haven water customers are being advised that all water being used for drinking and cooking be boiled for at least one minute beforehand. Bottled water can be used as an alternative. The precautionary boil will be in effect until sometime tomorrow. Any questions can be directed to City Hall in Moore Haven at (863) 946-0711.
