News Cast for October 4th:

It’s a special time in Okeechobee right now and it’s called Homecoming. The festivities began yesterday on a near perfect evening weather-wise with the Okeechobee County Homecoming Parade. Several colorful floats were going down Okeechobee city roads, featuring Ms. Brahman candidates, reunion candidates, football team members and more. One of the many county residents who witnessed the parade was Cheryl Jones, who has two granddaughters featured on one of the many floats and she says it’s a pleasure to see the result of all the hard work that goes into bringing this event to life. For freshman Levi Ferrell, it was great to see all the parade had to offer. The festivities continued later on with the pep rally and bonfire at Okeechobee High School (OHS) on a beautiful, breezy night. Freshman Georgia Harris says she enjoyed both events. Nearly fifteen thousand pallets were used for this bonfire. The festivities continue tonight with the Homecoming game as the Brahmans take on Seminole Ridge. The game will be broadcast live on WOKC with kickoff beginning at 7pm.

The Okeechobee County Emergency Management Center will be the site for a special class called SKYWARN tomorrow beginning at ten o’clock. Emergency Management Director Mitch Smeykal says as many as 22 volunteers have signed up for this SKYWARN class when it has been previously offered. It has been a part of the National Weather Service since the 1960’s, to train people to be weather spotters in their areas. They would report severe and hazardous weather to help meteorologists make life saving decisions in the event of a severe weather situation. Smeykal says these weather spotters are not “storm chasers” in any way. Smeykal says these weather spotters are invaluable because as advanced as Doppler radar has become over the years, it has its limitations. If you miss tomorrow’s SKYWARN class, there will be another class next Saturday at the Martin County Emergency Management Center in Stuart. People that are interested can get more information by calling the Emergency Management Center, the weather service in Melbourne or by downloading the Okeechobee Emergency Management app to your smartphone.

A sting operation resulted in the arrest of an Okeechobee man Tuesday afternoon on drug charges and more. Narcotics officers from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Department conducted an undercover operation using a confidential informant who was instructed to purchase illegal drugs from 31 year old Devon Anthony Mitchell Junior, a man the informant had bought drugs from before. The informant met Mitchell at a supermarket and bought some oxycodone tablets from him as it was being documented by officers while inside Mitchell’s vehicle in the parking lot. As the informant left the scene, officers then converged on Mitchell, who later tried to flee the scene recklessly, without regard for others in the parking lot and struck an unmarked patrol vehicle. He was booked into county jail in lieu of a $150 thousand dollar bond.
