News Cast for October 10th:

The issue of the location of the upcoming Mexican Rodeo was a topic of discussion and concern at Tuesday’s Okeechobee County Commissioners’ meeting. The Mexican Rodeo, which is normally held at the Agri-Civic Center, won’t be held there this year because of a horse show being planned there at that time and the promoter for the Mexican Rodeo is asking for it to be held at the Cattlemen’s Arena on Highway 441 across from Raulerson Hospital and Nursing Home. There are issues associated with this event, including loud noise from three or four bands performing there, large crowds and traffic and Stephen presented those concerns to the commissioners and suggested a need for a temporary use permit. There will be a further discussion on the matter between Sheriff Stephen, County Administrator Robbie Chartier and the Planning and Zoning Board sometime soon and Stephen says he’s confident it’ll be worked out then and the Mexican Rodeo will take place. The Mexican Rodeo is scheduled to take place on October 20th. Stephen says this special use permit means that the promoters will be held to certain guidelines such as having necessary security, an ambulance standing by in case of injuries during the rough stock event and turning the music off at a set time.

An Okeechobee man is in county jail at this time on some serious charges in connection with a hit and run accident last Thursday evening. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the four hundred block of Route 70 East a little before 5:30 and were told by the driver and passenger of the vehicle that hit them had fled the scene and was last seen at a bank dropping off a woman. Deputies say later on the car was found sinking in a canal on the six hundred block of SE 8th Street and Glades County authorities say the car was reported stolen from its owner by a man identified as 34 year old Joshua Bo Duke. A Be on the Lookout (BOLO) was issued for Duke and he was arrested on Sunday evening while hiding at the Best Western Hotel on the 39 hundred block of Highway 441 South. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and driving on a suspended license. He was booked into county jail and his bond is set at $20 thousand dollars.

There were a lot of community businesses recognized as part of Tuesday night’s Okeechobee County School Board meeting. No less than sixteen area businesses were recognized and received awards for their efforts in the school district’s Pre Plan Week. One of those many supporters of Pre Plan Week was Raulerson Hospital. Brian Millear, CEO of Raulerson Hospital says he’s proud that Raulerson Hospital is a part of the group that supports schools and children in the county. Millear says it’s important because we have to continue to invest in schoolchildren’s future. Other businesses that were recognized during Pre Plan Week were Brennan Eye Care, Center State Bank and Mid Florida Credit Union.

A Lake Placid man was arrested Monday night and he’s facing DUI manslaughter charges in connection with a vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Myakka City man last year in Desoto County. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers say 60 year old William Wesley Roberts was driving a Ford F-350 pickup truck southwest on State Route 72 in Arcadia on the night of December 16th when he was making a left turn and violated the right of way, resulting in a collision with an oncoming motorcycle, driven by 23 year old Justin Daniel Peachey. Peachey was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. FHP officers say Roberts was driving with a blood alcohol level of .17 at the time of the accident, which is more than twice the legal limit. He’s currently in Desoto County Jail awaiting his arraignment hearing.
