Okeechobee High School Athletic Director Kenny Buckner was named OHS head football coach last week taking for over Ty Smith who resigned in May. Buckner has been at Okeechobee for over 20 years and was an assistant football coach with the Brahmans for 10. Buckner has also coached football at 7 other schools including Glades Day, American Heritage, Moore Haven and Lake Placid. This is Buckner’s first role as head coach.
Buckner is admittedly getting a late start on the logistics associated with running a program. He will rely on his knowledge of the school, community and players to fast track getting organized. Buckner has already spoken with some players that are around for various camps and plans on meeting with the previous coaching staff in the next week to discuss their roles.
Defensively, Buckner doesn’t think the basic ideas will change. He wants to use an even man front and coach an aggressive team that will fly to the ball. Offensively, he plans to take some of what has been successful from the last few seasons and add a few changes. Buckner would like to see a more spread style offense.
Brahman football will begin the 2021 season with the Kickoff Classic at Jupiter High School on August 20th. WOKC will broadcast every game home and away.
