Bret Smith spoke recently to the Kiwanis Club of Okeechobee. Smith is the interim administrator for the Florida Department of Health for Okeechobee County.

Smith updated the club on the county’s vaccination distribution program and expressed optimism that the county along with the rest of the country is trending in the direction of recovery.

Smith feels that it is important to be vaccinated as a way to flatten the curve. Smith understands the hesitation to take the vaccine but is confident in the research and data as it pertains to safety.

To date, nearly 19,000 vaccines have been administered in Okeechobee however the daily administration has lowered drastically from 300 daily at its’ peak. Smith and the department have been going into different communities in order to offer the vaccine.

Smith also spoke to the club about other goals he has for the future of the department in Okeechobee County which he hopes includes O.B and Maternal care locally.
