Glades Electric Cooperative unveiled its $50-million dollar broadband internet project.

The project called Connect will take three years to complete.

The fiber optic network will provide their over 13,300 thousand members to multi gigabit internet capability, among the fastest in the state.

They serve parts of Okeechobee, Glades, Highlands and Hendry County.

Jennifer Koukos said this service is needed.

“We really are going back to our roots.  We were founded because larger providers would not bring electricity to our communities.  We were founded to improve the quality of life in the 1940s.  Today broadband is the new electricity.  We want to be part of the solution for our communities.”

A fatality reported in Highlands County Sunday afternoon near the intersection of State Road 70 west and county road 721 in Brighton.

The Florida highway patrol said a truck collided with a motorcycle just after 2 pm.

They closed the road for several hours.

The motorcyclist, a 69 year old man from Boca Raton, was stopped at the flashing red light and attempted to make a left turn.

Troopers said he drove into the path of the east bound tractor trailer driven by a 75 year old Arcadia man.

The Boca Raton man died at the scene.

A man once convicted in the murder of an Okeechobee Correctional Institution guard, was found not guilty at a second trial in Port Charlotte.

Now Eddie McNealy is facing new drug charges.

Deputies there said they found three bags of cocaine during a traffic stop.

McNealy in 2008 was found guilty of 2nd degree murder in the slaying of Derrick Turner outside a night club.

Turner had been an all-state football star before becoming a corrections officer for the state.

McNealy’s conviction was later overturned on appeal.

The American Red Cross helping a family of seven in Whispering Pines after a fire.

Okeechobee County fire rescue said the weekend fire extensively damaged a single wide trailer and two vehicles.

There were no injuries reported.

Hendry County commissioners want to examine US 27 at County Road 835 east of Clewiston to make it safer, and will push for a red light.

They also approve a detailed special area plan for Felda, that includes new homes and business space.

Assistant county planner Ryan Alexander said the project covers over 340 acres.  It would include 706 new homes, 70 thousand square feet in commercial space and over 40 thousand square feet in office space on State Road 82.

County staff will also research stricter limits on construction noise after complaints from a Port LaBelle man, Larry Brown.

The current restriction is no noise from construction before 8 am and after 7 pm.

More drugs seized in Okeechobee…this time marijuana.

Two arrests were made Friday. 

Officers said 327 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia seized by the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force.

58 year old Sean Craven and 56 year old Gary German are facing felony charges.

A first for Osceola Middle School.

Trumpet player Jayden Azcona was accepted into the Florida Middle School All-State Band.

Azonca one of only 15 trumpet players in the state selected to play with the band.

24 percent of Okeechobees registered voters have cast ballot so far, 5,540. 

1,342 democrats, 548 non partisan, and 3,600 republicans have already voted.

Former President Donald Trump visited Miami Sunday to rally for Florida republicans including US Senator Marco Rubio.

Rubio said many voters in Miami don’t like where the country is headed.

Experts said Miami Dade could vote republican for the first time in years.
