Community starts recovery
The state said 12 people have died due to Hurricane Milton, five in St. Lucie County.
Okeechobee saw damage mostly from the tornadoes. All shelters closed on Thursday, and the OUA lifted the boil water advisory. Garbage collection resumed today. Those who get normal Friday pickup will be picked up on Monday.
The county will soon have details on debris pickup schedules.
Schools will reopen on Tuesday.
There are hurricane supplies, food water and tarps available from 8 am until 7 pm at the Okeechobee Agri Civic Center.
Glades County schools are closed until next Wednesday. They have been delivering hot meals to the community. The National Guard will have hurricane supplies this morning at Harney Pond in Lakeport, things like food, water and tarps. Glades County offices and the city of Moore Haven reopened this morning. Route 78 was shut down by damage for a time Thursday but has reopened.
South Florida Water management also reopened all of the locks and boat ramps.
Florida Power and Light still has 2170 customers out of power in Okeechobee as of Friday morning
Company Spokesman Ilan Kaufer said FPL committed to restoring power as quickly as possible.
“We know how difficult it can be without power and we don’t take that lightly. We also keep safety in mind for our customers and crews.”
Glades Electric Cooperative had a total of 10,327 without power and 452 in Okeechobee County.
Six people are confirmed dead in St. Lucie County from tornado activity in Lakewood Park.
Kenansville will pass out supplies like water, food and tarps at the community center beginning at 9 am on Saturday.
