SHOTS FIRED DURING VEHICLE BURGLARY
On August 22, 2023, at approximately 4:50AM, a homeowner on the 1000 block of Bayberry Loop in Clewiston, Florida observed three males on his home camera system burglarizing his vehicles. The homeowner grabbed a firearm, fired three to four shots, and went after the suspects who fled on foot between neighboring homes. The vehicle that the suspects came in was parked at the edge of the homeowner’s property.
Clewiston Police Officers arrived and noted a white Nissan sedan parked on the edge of the property with a male in the rear passenger seat attempting to conceal himself and a second male on the floorboard of the vehicle. Both juvenile males, identified as the vehicle burglars and residents of Belle Glade, Florida, were taken into custody. Neither male had been shot. A perimeter was established and a search for additional suspects with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit was conducted, concluding with no additional suspects located.
A computer check revealed that the white Nissan sedan was reported stolen by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Both males were charged with Attempted Burglary and Resisting an Officer without Violence. One of the males was charged with Marijuana Possession less than 20 Grams. They were transported to the Henry County Jail and ultimately released to their parents at the direction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
As portions of this incident continue to be investigated and more arrests are pending, no additional information is being released at this time. Chief Tom Lewis would like to thank the members of the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
