Okeechobee police released an affidavit that explains child abuse allegations against Anna Adamo, 59.
The police applied for criminal charges of aggravated child abuse, attempted murder in the first degree and poisoning of a child.
It’s alleged an 11-year-old toddler digested anti-freeze while under the babysitters care on February 12, 2025.
The toddler had to be taken to three different hospitals and required treatment that included CPR for cardiac arrest and life support.
The child has since recovered.
The affidavit alleged Adamo was the baby sitter for the child and the only adult around the child that day.
The child was dropped off at 9:30 am and picked up at 3:30 pm.
The grandmother of the child was more tired that usual and fell asleep immediately. The child was asleep about two hours and remained lethargic, and unalert was transferred to another car seat.
After the child vomited it was taken to the emergency room at HCA Raulerson and was later transported to Lawnwood Medical Center. The child had a full cardiac arrest while at the hospital. Life saving efforts were made for 10 minutes to save the child.
Eventually the child was transported to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami where the toddler was in critical condition. They tested the child and found presence of Crystal Oxilate which comes from anti-freeze.
Police said they found an open container of anti-freeze in the suspects garage with about 2 ¾ cups of anti-freeze missing.
Adamo was arrested on Oct. 3 in Lowndes County, Georgia and was listed as a fugitive from justice.
Prosecutors said she was be extradited back to Okeechobee to face criminal charges.
The state attorney has not filed any charges at last report.
Okeechobee had fewer wildfires this year, especially larger fires.
Most of South Florida saw less than average rainfall through September and some parts of the region were still considered to be in drought like conditions.
The Florida Forest Service recently burned 200 acres at the Kissimmee Bend State Forest north of Basinger.
FFS Spokesperson Dave Grubich said there were a number of burn permit violations this summer with most of them in Highlands County.
He said the number of wild fires was about average.
The Okeechobee Tourist Development Council received requests to promote and help advertise 24 different events this year.
The total amount requested for support was $218,000.
The TDC voted to fund $140,000 to promote those events.
The events included five community events, two concerts of music festivals, two sporting events, three fishing tournaments, six youth rodeos and a celebration for the Great Florida Cattle Drive that will end at the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Arena.
A Buckhead Ridge woman was found guilty at trial of trafficking in methamphetamines.
Patricia Coberly, 37 was scheduled to be sentenced on November 4th.
A traffic stop for speeding on November 2, 2024 on route 78 near Hunter Road allegedly turned up illegal narcotics, Lt. Gary Johnson said.
Coberly was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle. The arrest affidavit said next to a backpack that contained lotto tickets, numerous needles, a digital scale, other paraphernalia, and a Ziploc style bag with crystal methamphetamine.
The drugs weighed about 26.5 grams.
