WOKC News. A decade in prison with WOKC News, I’m Charles Murphy. One of five people implicated in a large cocaine investigation is sentenced to 10 years in prison. Harvey Spells of Okeechobee pled no contest to six felony charges that included conspiracy to traffic in cocaine. The Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force investigating the incident dating back to August of 2023. Spells allegedly delivered kilos of cocaine from Lareda to Okeechobee. He was under surveillance and deputies followed him to a residence on Northwest 6th Street, where they were able to get a search warrant. Inside, they located 2160 grams of cocaine and 1247 grams of marijuana. During a vehicle stop, they allegedly found twenty five hundred and ten dollars in suspected drug cash. One of the suspects admitted there was a trap or hiding spot in one of the vehicles and deputies located another thirty three hundred and forty two grams of narcotics and nearly twenty five thousand dollars in cash in that hiding spot. Spells had no prior criminal record. In the past week, three pedestrians and or bicyclists have been struck in Okeechobee, one of them killed at the main intersection. Chief Deputy Michael Haysleaf in his public safety minute this week urged motorists to use caution and to slow down and to be more alert. He had this advice to pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians should use a designated crosswalk whenever one is available before entering the roadway. Stop, look both ways and make sure approaching drivers see you. Never assume you have been noticed. A Miami man is the remains found on State Road 70 in Highlands County in July. He’s been identified as forty seven year old Lazaro Alonzo. He was currently homeless. The cause of death remains under investigation. Highlands County investigators say there was no evidence of foul play. An Okeechobee man, Agapito De Jesus, is facing charges. He sold powder and or crack cocaine on four occasions in the past month. The Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force says some of the transactions occurred at a convenience store on US 98, a total of seventeen thousand dollars in cocaine allegedly sold. He’s facing four counts of trafficking. Booker Park residents in Indiantown concerned about major flooding that occurred there on Saturday, August 29th. The weatherman says about six inches of rain fell in a two or three hour period. President Jennifer Seston is blaming the new housing developments for disrupting drainage. There’s videos of the water just flowing out of their development. I’m certain that if it happened in River Oaks, Terra Lago is no different. Any other development is going to be no different. It should be almost common sense to anybody that when you build something up, the water has nowhere else to go but be displaced everywhere else around you. This resident said they couldn’t even send kids to school. The bus stops, the bus stop completely onto 171st and the street there for flooding. Parents nowhere to stop. How are they going to pick up the kids? And most of them work. They rely on the bus transport or the kids rely on walking. And they’re not able to get basic learning skills because of the flood.
