WOKC News. Okachubi celebrates veterans with WOKC News. I’m Charles Murphy. Okachubi schools had several observances to honor veterans on Veterans Day, and there’s also a community observance in Veterans Park that included a flyover of five helicopters courtesy of the Florida Forest Service at the Okachubi freshman campus observance at the First Baptist Church Recreation Outreach Center. Principal Vicki Goggin says it’s important to take time to remember veterans. Today, we honor our nation’s veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms and the freedoms of our allies around the world. Student Madison Mills says one day only is set aside for veterans each year. There are 365 days in a year, and of those 365 days, only one is dedicated to our veterans. So today, as we say thank you, let us remember that our gratitude should not end as we walk out this building and watch the sun go down. Student Emily Shorter says each of us are impacted in some way by a veteran. But whether they served at home or overseas, each one of them wrote a blank check to America, a check that could be cashed for any amount, including their lives. So as we think about Veterans Day, let’s remember that it is more than just a day, but a day to remember. To all veterans out there, thank you. Seriously, thank you for everything you’ve done and sacrificed for us. You put your lives on the line so we could have the freedom to live ours the way we want. The county approves a project to harden two fire stations, one and two, for $661,400, a low bidder Baromi Construction. The county named a new manager at the airport in Commerce Park, John Zericki, and they want to rededicate the Alderman Building. Sistin County administrators saluted a team of teenagers from Okeechobee that did well at a national dairy competition. And County Commissioner Brad Goodbread suggests the county relook at a Berman Road extension up to Route 68 East. The city of Okeechobee got two million from the state last year to harden City Hall and the former police and fire station. They’re looking at an emergency operations center. Administrator Gary Ritter says a lot of work has been done and the public safety building is looking good. We’ve redone all the downstairs. We have conference room. We have three office spaces downstairs. He also wants to paint a mural on the south side of the building to honor the now defunct fire department. A former park supervisor for St. Lucie County plans to sue the county and federal court alleging harassment and discrimination because he’s a black male. Willie Redding talked about that lawsuit at a recent public meeting. In August 2023, I filed an internal complaint about serious misconduct about my supervisor. Instead of being protected, I was targeted, retaliated against. My character was attacked. My authority stripped and my 25 year career derailed. I’m Charles Murphy. WOKC News.
