WOKC News. Argument includes gun, dagger, and van. With WOKC News, I’m Charles Murphy. A man was run over in an apparent argument over neighborhood speeding on December 26th. An arrest report from Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputies say Gregory Nelson is charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was held at the jail on a $20,000 bond. The incident on Southeast 35th Terrace began as a battery complaint. A resident, Kyle Jones, was struck by the van after the two exchanged words. Jones says his daughter was putting out the trash curbside and was nearly struck by the speeding van. He says Nelson produced the knife. Jones was armed with a handgun on his hip. Jones says Nelson told him he was going to run him over and struck him as he drove off. Jones fell into the ditch and suffered minor injuries, like scratches to his right arm and back. Nelson had a homemade dagger in the van. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Florida Highway Patrol, conducted a traffic enforcement operation along State Road 60 near Yeehaw Junction. It was part of a special initiative during the holiday season. The effort targeted unsafe driving behaviors like speeding, DUI, and aggressive driving. They’re trying to keep our roadways safe. Sheriff Christopher Blackman says people need to drive safer, plan ahead, and celebrate responsibly. One driver pulled over, was going 118 miles an hour, and had three toddlers in the back seat of the vehicle. The operation, again with FHP, led to 345 total tickets, 56 warnings, 11 arrests, and five super-speeder violations and arrests. The Glades Electric Education Foundation, for the past 25 years, has given out $819,000 in college scholarships. They gave out five $2,000 career program scholarships this year at iTech Glades. Since 2022, 20 scholarships have been granted, a total of $40,000. They also have given out college scholarships to seniors of $5,000. This year, the recipients included Jackson Holcomb of Okeechobee High School. An Okeechobee woman was arrested for DUI after she was found unresponsive in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store on 441 SE. An arrest report from Okeechobee deputies say Amanda Jones was held on a $16,000 bond facing charges of fentanyl possession, methamphetamine possession, marijuana possession, and possession of controlled substances. Deputies say the woman appeared to be unconscious in the vehicle. She also failed field sobriety exercises. Jones was freed at the scene by Okeechobee County Fire Rescue. Crew members say they had to bang on the car window several times to wake her up. She also didn’t know what day of the week it was. Deputies say they also found some illegal narcotics inside the vehicle.
