WOKC News. Troopers work fatality with WOKC News. I’m Charles Murphy. The Florida Highway Patrol says a pedestrian was struck and killed around 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at the intersection of State Road 78 and Southwest 16th Avenue. The only details they have is it was a 28-year-old female. The crash remained under investigation. The fight at the Iron Eagle Bar led to five individuals being trespassed. Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputies say a female had a head injury and had to be treated by EMS. A November 16th shooting at Lock 7 results in charges. Joel MacArthur is accused of firing three shots inside a bathroom. There was some kind of assault going on in that bathroom at the time. The victim that was assaulted was not shot but was injured and was treated at Rollerson Hospital. The Village of Indian Town plans to sell five acres on 710. It could possibly become a health care campus. They’re waiting for public water to be available. Indian River State College will bring GED courses back to Indian Town High School this month. And Indian Town now has more deputies, including one deputy who will work traffic on Citrus, Allapattah and Warfield full-time. Lieutenant Michael McCarthy spoke on improving the traffic enforcement. They’re going to be primarily focused on the Citrus 710 and 609 to help with some of the speeding issues. Obviously, you all know some of the issues we have with a lot of the fatalities because of the bad accidents. So hopefully we can start curbing that a little bit. There was a winning Fantasy V last night drawn in Indian Town. The winning ticket, $54,609, where it’s sold at the Circle K. The winning numbers, 7, 10, 18, 23, and 35. 7, 10, 18, 23, and 35. Artificial intelligence will be among the issues addressed by the Florida State Legislature this year. Kevin O’Farrill is senior chancellor at the Florida Department of Education. I don’t think the question is going to be about fearing it. I think we need to understand how to put parameters around this. He says AI will impact every single industry and occupations, and we should not fear it, but embrace it. But the reality is, is Florida is well positioned to handle this. We have the collaborative nature. We have the integrative technology. We have the desire to push forward and to position ourselves in a way that we’re going to maximize artificial intelligence to advance our economic interests, as well as our occupational growth across all sectors. Some criminal mischief at the freshman campus reported on New Year’s evening. There was one arrest made for criminal mischief. We do not know the extent of the damage at this point. Indian River State College is thanking the state legislature for providing more support for their nursing program. There has been a nursing shortfall in the state. College president Dr. Timothy Moore says they get some great support from the state for the Okeechobee nursing program. 50% of our students out there have aspirations to be in health care somewhere. That building is the ground point for all of that because we have the ability to teach them in modern, safe infrastructure to transform the Treasure Coast. As you know, we’re 500,000 nurses short in this nation today. It’s going to get worse, not better. The Okeechobee City Technical Review Committee approved plans for nine multifamily townhouses at 317 SE 4th Street. The land is just under one acre and the building will measure 10,000 square feet. There will be attached garages as well. They also approved a project in the Okeechobee Commerce Center for a landmark precast. It includes a warehouse, a batch plant and office building. 40 new jobs could be created on that 3.5 acre project. I’m Charles Murphy, WOKC News.
