WOKC News. Prison guard recovering with WOKC News. I’m Charles Murphy, an inmate at Oogachobee Correctional Facility. 53-year-old Broderick Dixon is facing attempted first-degree murder charges. It’s alleged that he stabbed a guard in the rec yard last week multiple times. The state attorney’s office says the guard will recover. Another death on 710 near Indiantown in a head-on collision. It happens at Southwest Silver Fox Lane about 2 a.m. Sunday. A 40-year-old man was killed. A 41-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital by medical helicopter. It was a head-on crash, and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating. The Taylor Creek lock will close temporarily seven days a week now, as the water levels in Lake Oogachobee are well below 11 feet at 10.7 feet. All the other locks on the northern rim of the lake are also closed. You’ll have to go to Scott Driver or Lock 7. The state announced $46 million in funding for the village of Indiantown’s water treatment plant. They’re expecting eventually to have about $70 million to spend. Habitat for Humanity and Oogachobee County officials celebrated a new home being built in Douglas Park. It’ll be at 503 Northeast 15th Avenue this summer. The Habitat will be taking applications and determine who will get that home. PGA Foundation of South Florida sponsoring the home, Tom Weldenhaus says Habitat does good work and have a lot going on to improve our housing stock. Our foundation does a lot of good work. We have a number of different programs. Habitat’s just one of them. We have a Smiling for Life program. We have Junior Golf program, which builds character in the kids as well as provided competition for them. We have a military program called PGA Hope that we operate in Habitat’s one of them that we’ve been doing the longest. This is our 13th home out of 14. So there’s 14 counties within our section, including Puerto Rico. Christian Suarez urges people in Oogachobee to apply. He’s with Our Village. He says it’s a great help. This process is going to be very crucial for them. The nice part about the process is it’s only an Oogachobee family that can apply for it. So a lot of our problem is we get priced out by people coming in from the coast. So for this application, only to be open to Oogachobee residents has been crucial. Oogachobee County changing their comprehensive plan. They’re trying to get state road improved capacity and reduce urban sprawl. Commissioner Terry Burroughs says a lot of Floridians think we’re losing rural Florida. He says we need some kind of development protections. We’re going to start working on land development regulations to put guardrails in for things that could potentially come here that could harm us if we don’t have the guardrails in it. And we’re going to work on those types of things as we come forth. And people may disagree with it, but they need to have an open mind why we’re doing things. The Brush Fire in Otona, January 17, the claim to life has been probed by the Department of Agriculture. The sheriff and medical examiner finished their investigation of the death of the man, 73-year-old Douglas Allen, who was burned in the blaze. Over 90% of his face and body, he died at Bradenton’s Blake Hospital. The cause of death ruled thermal injury. A volunteer fireman, Sheldon Barracuillo, suffered burns to 7% of his body. Sheriff deputies and rescuers, according to the report, had difficulty in locating the men, but found them near 2582 Otona Locks Road after a delay, surrounded by active flames. The airboat in Cornwell that overturned, killing three people on board, was apparently spraying exotic plants for the South Florida Water Management District. The airboat crash being investigated by OSHA took place on June 15. I’m Charles Murphy, WOKC News.
