***PSA for local businesses***

Okeechobee Police Department received a report of a fraud that took place on Tuesday, January 30th.

A female, by the name of “Kathryn” contacted the business posing as a representative from a company that controls their credit card readers. She stated she was calling and needed to speak with the owner to authorize a terminal update. The owner was not available and the representative advised the front desk can authorize it in her place. The employee followed directions and completed the call. A short time later, the company was alerted to a refund authorization for $9,349.74 that was deducted from their account.

Please take a moment to speak with your staff and alert them to a fraud scam targeting businesses.
