WOKC News. The trophies are safe with WOKC News. I’m Charles Murphy. Social media was ablaze last week when photos of historic trophies and items in the gymnasium as they were demolishing it made people concerned. Superintendent Dylan Tenors admits there was a bit of a snafu with the gym demolition. The order of when the buildings were gonna come down, they kinda went out of order. I think when they punched a hole in the gym wall to get the logo out of the center of the floor, cause we’re using the logo that was in the center of the floor in the new school. But I think when they had to poke the hole in the side of the gym to even get that out, I think they said, you know what, let’s just start here. The Florida High School Rodeo Association in Okeechobee County hope to keep their relationship going. The Ag Center for 12 years has been holding high school rodeos many times the state finals. Richard Guthrie with the Florida High School Rodeo Association says the county support is vital. We are a nonprofit and without community support, we would struggle, we would fail. And this community, this town, the board here, the businesses in this town have been gracious and very generous to us over the years. Expect a lot of traffic on the roads for July 4th. AAA is predicting 72 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home. That’s a 5.3% increase from last year. NBC’s Tom Costello is reporting more people hit the road for the 4th of July. Over the long holiday week starting June 28th, more than 72 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more. And the vast majority will go by car. Gas prices now about 90 cents higher than they were this time last year. Travel site Going says the average round trip flight is up 16% from a year ago, averaging $488. Osceola County Commissioner’s honoring Tourism Week and Small Business. 37% of their economy is now tied to tourism. May was also National Nursing Week. Chief Keith Neely with the Florida Prison System told Osceola commissioners that nurses and doctors who choose to work in prisons have a very high level of commitment. The fact that these individuals bravely come into a correctional facility where many in the medical industry shy away from, says a lot about them. Martin County deputies, a drug enforcement agency and a SWAT team execute a search warrant in Indian Towns Booker Park at Southwest 174th Court. They come up with some 539 grams of cocaine inside a plastic bag in a closet. They’ve arrested 37 year old Markina Alsinat on charges of trafficking in cocaine. Her bond was a half a million dollars. St. Lucie deputies arrest an Okachobe man, Fernando Zapata at a group home in Port St. Lucie on charges of aggravated battery on an elderly person. There is video of the incident. Zapata had been threatening staff and residents. He attempted to push over the man as he rode in a wheelchair. I’m Charles Murphy, WOKC News.
