WOKC News. Getting ready for the 4th with WOKC News, I’m Charles Murphy. All available troopers will be out in force for the July 4th long weekend. They’ll be doing red, white, and blue lights, a DUI enforcement effort. Lieutenant Greg Bueno says you need to think and plan before you plan to drink and then drive. People taking the extra time and focus to do the right thing behind the wheel, that means driving a speed limit, driving sober, distracted, free, and staying buckled up. If you’re taking a long trip, be sure to check your tires. Yogochebe Library, with a presentation about the nation’s 250th birthday, Dr. David Head, a professor at the University of Central Florida, gave a lecture on Florida’s role in the revolution. Florida actually didn’t support the war much. They felt the status quo under British rule would be best for the territory. Florida was broken up into two colonies. Spain actually did much of the fighting, capturing Pensacola and a British army. Dr. Head said the British promoted growth in Florida by discouraging westward expansion after the French and Indian War. They understand that Americans want to move westward. Okay, they understand that their colonists are like that. But they say, okay, don’t move west and collide with Native Americans there. How about you fill up these relatively small population places like Canada to the north? Or the Floridas to the south? He says most Floridians didn’t expect the patriots to win freedom for the United States, and Florida was bringing more loyalists to the crown into Florida at that time. Another movement of people has to do with loyalists moving to Florida. The Florida governors, they provide inducements for people to move here. Things like grants of land. If you come and occupy the land for a certain number of years, then it belongs to you. You will not have to pay taxes on your property for 10 years. I like how the governor has floated this idea, right, no property tax. That’s an old British idea. Going back to East Florida. Suicide, the cause of death for 19-year-old Royer Perez Jimenez. At the finding of the medical examiner, the inmate at the Glades Attention Center found March 16th hanging from a towel tied to a shower head in the shower. An inmate alerted a guard who discovered the hanging. CPR efforts were unsuccessful. Other inmates had seen the inmates and they thought it was an inmate sleeping in the shower and were not alarmed. Cameras in the shower area were not operational. Of course, privacy can’t be in the shower anyway. The 19-year-old, sadly, had been arrested in Edgewater Police for a minor traffic violation, but he had overstayed his visa. An Ogochuey man got a trespass warning after he threatened to kill people on Northwest 32nd Avenue at a child’s birthday party. The man was reportedly upset with a Facebook video he thought was stupid about a fight. They did locate some marijuana on the suspect. The suspect said it was only a verbal altercation.
